CME: Opportunities and gaps in the management of chronic hypoparathyroidism

Activity Description / Statement of Need:

In this online, self-learning activity:

Chronic hypoparathyroidism is a rare disorder characterized by decreased function of parathyroid glands resulting in low levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH). There are a variety of causes, including autoimmune disease, congenital defects, complications following thyroidectomy, or damage caused by radiation therapy. In a normal functioning parathyroid gland, PTH is secreted in response to low serum-ionized calcium. Nearly 60,000 people in the United States have been diagnosed with the disorder, and 73% to 78% of cases are caused by surgery. And one in every 2,500 people in U.S. has chronic hypoparathyroidism.

Patients with hypoparathyroidism experience abnormal mineral homeostasis affecting bone, kidney, and the gastrointestinal tract. Pathogenesis of the condition includes reduced osteoclast-mediated bone resorption, reduced calcium reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubules of the kidneys, and increased phosphorus reabsorption from the proximal convoluted tubules, causing hyperphosphatemia. In severe, untreated cases, hypocalcemia can result in abnormal skeletal formation, renal failure, cognitive impairment, bronchospasms, laryngospasms, neuromuscular irritability, prolonged QTc, and cardiovascular disease.

Target Audience:

The following HCPs: Endocrinologists and primary care physicians; physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and pharmacists who practice in endocrinology and internal medicine; and any other healthcare professionals with an interest in or who clinically encounter patients with hypoparathyroidism.
