CME: How implicit bias and culture competence shape the patient healthcare experience

Activity Description / Statement of Need:

Cultural competence has been defined in a variety of ways. According to the CDC, cultural competence is a “set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system, agency, or among professionals that enables effective work in cross-cultural situations.” In the setting of healthcare, practicing cultural competence can improve the ability of healthcare professionals (HCPs) to meet the social, cultural, and linguistic needs of patients, which may ultimately improve health outcomes among diverse groups of patients with unique sociocultural identities including race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation.

These observations illustrate not only that there is a gap in care related to the incorporation of cultural sensitivity into health care in the US but also that there are available solutions, and HCPs and their patients stand to benefit from provision of continuing education to address those needs.

Target Audience:

Physicians, pharmacists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other HCPs.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the session the participant will be able to:

  • Define bias and identify different types of bias in medicine.
  • Articulate examples of how bias makes an impact in education, research, clinical diagnosis, treatment decisions, and health outcomes.
  • Recall challenges in healthcare encountered by patients of different populations, cultural backgrounds, and identities.
  • Describe the professional ethical responsibility to mitigate bias and develop cultural humility.
  • Develop strategies to address bias and practice respect for patients from all backgrounds.
