Primary immunodeficiency disease (PID or PIDD) is a group of conditions encompassing more than 300 different genetic immune deficiencies. The heterogeneous etiology of PID leads to a vast array of clinical presentations, including infection, malignancy, autoimmunity, and inflammation.Once thought to be exceedingly rare, PID is increasingly being recognized as an underdiagnosed disease affecting approximately 6 million people worldwide – and about 1 in 1,200 people in the US.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the session the participant will be able to:

  • List early signs and symptoms of primary immunodeficiency (PID), and employ appropriate diagnostic techniques to identify patients with PID
  • Describe appropriate treatment regimens for PID, including the use of Ig replacement therapy and antibiotic prophylaxis when appropriate, and apply them to patient cases
  • Describe the various options for Ig replacement therapy and implement routine monitoring procedures to ensure effectiveness
  • Individualize treatment plans with a focus on patient- and disease-related factors unique to PID
